Defining Aggression: Views from Biology, Psychology, and the Neuroscience
The concept of aggression is a complex one. With very different conceptual perspectives, ethology, experimental animal psychology, and neuroscience all have different viewpoints with some interesting points of convergence. In this talk, I will discuss the different ways of thinking about aggression. I will also discuss some concepts that are often conflated with the concept of aggression such as “reactivity”, “dominance”, and “predation”, and discuss how they relate (if at all) to aggression from the three perspectives. I will emphasize the socio-affective dimension of aggression: When I started working with wolves for my PhD in 1992, my very first day observing them interacting, I exclaimed “it’s all limbic!”. This was the realization of a 25 year old who before then thought of behaviour in either Behaviourist or Cognitivist views, recognizing that they (and we) are not machines.
